The Former Italian Embassy: Power and Architecture in the Heart of Tunis
Located on today’s Jamal Abdennacer Street, near the French Embassy, the former Italian Embassy stands as a striking example of 1930s architecture in Tunis. Commissioned by Mussolini’s regime in 1931, it was designed by architects Fausto and Giglio. The building reflects strong Art Deco influences, featuring geometric shapes, clean lines, and stylized decorative elements. Two medallions on the façade still bear witness to that era. Its massive structure overlooking Monji Bali Square illustrates the fascist regime’s intent to assert its symbolic presence in Tunisia’s urban landscape.
