The Former British Embassy: A Landmark of Diplomatic History in Tunis
Located at Bab Bhar, the former British Embassy is a key landmark of Tunisia’s diplomatic history. The first British consulate was built on this site in the 17th century, later replaced in the early 19th century by a European-style building. The current structure, completed in 1914 in a neo-Moorish style, stands at the intersection of the medina, the old consular quarter, and the European city. It reflects the diplomatic ties between Tunisia and Britain during a time of Franco-British rivalry under the Ottoman Empire. In 2003, the building was handed over to Tunisia and was transformed into the “Royal Victoria” hotel in 2016.
