Cathedral of Carthage

Built between 1884 and 1890 on Byrsa Hill, the Saint Louis Cathedral of Carthage is a landmark of Tunisia’s cultural and historical heritage. Constructed in a Roman-Byzantine style, it was dedicated to Saint Louis, the French king who died in Carthage during the Eighth Crusade. Deconsecrated in 1964 following Tunisia’s independence, it was transformed in 1993 into a cultural venue now known as the Acropolium of Carthage. The building now hosts concerts, exhibitions, and cultural events, blending spirituality with modern artistic expression. It stands as a symbol of intercultural dialogue and a witness to Franco-Tunisian history.
