Rabbinical Court

The Rabbinical Court, also known as the Beth Din, is the Jewish religious legal body responsible for administering justice within the community in accordance with Halakha (Jewish law). Usually led by one or more qualified rabbis, it adjudicates religious and civil matters such as marriages, divorces (get), conversions, financial disputes, inheritance, and dietary laws (kashrut).

In Tunisia, the Rabbinical Court has historically played a central role in community life, especially in cities like Tunis and Djerba where Jewish life was highly structured. It provided a framework for conflict resolution rooted in tradition and ethics, often operating in parallel with the civil legal system.

Today, although its official jurisdiction has diminished in a secularized state, the Rabbinical Court still serves as a moral and spiritual authority. It remains a place of guidance, listening, and decision-making for Tunisian Jewish families, continuing a legacy of religious justice and communal wisdom.
