Offices of Élie Nataf and Paul Ghez
Élie Nataf (1888–1962) and Paul Ghez (1896–1971) were prominent figures in the Tunisian legal sphere and Jewish community during the 20th century. Their professional partnership and communal involvement marked a period of transition and modernization for Tunisian Jews.
In 1928, they established a joint law office at 13 Rue Saint-Charles in Tunis. This office became a central hub for Jewish legal and communal life, intertwining professional concerns with social aspirations.YouScribe
Élie Nataf served as the bâtonnier (head) of the Tunis Bar Association from 1938 to 1945 and presided over the Jewish Community of Tunis twice (1934–1938 and 1947–1951). He played a pivotal role in modernizing communal institutions and representing Tunisian Jews within the World Jewish Congress.
Paul Ghez, after completing his internship in Nataf’s office, became an influential lawyer and community leader. His diary, Six Months Under the Nazi Heel, written during the German occupation of 1942–1943, provides a poignant account of the trials faced by the Jewish community in Tunis.
