Alexandre Roubtzoff

Born in Saint Petersburg in 1884, Alexandre Roubtzoff was a Russian painter who made Tunisia his home and main source of inspiration. He settled in Tunis in 1924, captivated by the country’s light, colors, and everyday life. His work, rooted in Orientalist tradition, portrays the landscapes, people, and customs of Tunisia with deep affection and artistic sensitivity. Roubtzoff became a key figure in Tunisian art and chose to remain there until his death in 1949. He is buried in the Christian cemetery of Borgel, in the Russian Section II, a lasting testament to his bond with Tunisia.
