The Jewish Necropolis Of Djebel Khaoui
Following its 1833 discovery, archaeologists for decades assumed that this ancient burial site contained the remains of Punic people. It was only at the end of the late nineteenth century that the archaeologist, Révérend Père Delattre, established that the site was a Jewish burial ground from the Roman era. Religious inscriptions and engravings appear on many of the tombs (we find a menorah, a shofar, remnants of words written in Hebrew). This necropolis is one of the oldest in Tunisia. It is a precious site of memory that illuminates the historic presence of Jews in Tunisia.
