The Smadja-Borg Stadium

During the 1930s, l’Union sportive tunisienne (UST), a club founded in 1917, dominated Tunisian football, winning numerous league titles, Tunisian cups and other trophies. Almost all UST’s players were Tunisian Jews. UST’s stadium, Smadja-Borg, was named after Henri Smadja, a newspaper owner (La Presse) with Socialist sympathies. A second generation of Jewish footballers played for UST during the 1950s. These included Raymond Younés and Popaul Perez. The formidable Bébé Slama captained UST at the age of 17. Slama represented Tunisia in the friendly match against the Algerian team of the FLN in 1958.
