Keren Yechoua Synagogue, Marsa
Keren Yéchoua continues to function as a synagogue. Keren Yéchoua opened in 1927 and was named after its benefactor, Sauveur Kisraoui (Yéchoua Sauveur), a Tunisian Jew with British ancestry. The synagogue has a distinctive Andalusian architectural style. From the late nineteenth century La Marsa became a popular destination for Tunis’ Jews to spend weekends and summers. Since it was created in 1872, the TGM (Tunis-La Goulette-La Marsa) – the first railway in Tunisia – has allowed easy access from La Marsa to the centre of Tunis. The building was broken into and vandalized in 2002. Today the synagogue is only open during the summer months.
